Finally a video of our apartment

It's been far too long since the last post, I know. I'll try to get caught up soon. In the meantime, here's a video of our apartment for our family (or whoever else would like to watch it):

Salzburg: Untersberg mountain

South of the city is Untersburg, a 1800+ meter high mountain. We took a hanging cable car up to the top, which made Josh kind of sick.

It was cold up there, hence the jackets and sweater.

A panoramic view from the top.

Salzburg: Hohensalzburg Fortress

This fortress was built on a rocky hill to make the city look like it could defend itself. There are some beautiful views from up there.

"Where is my artillery?"

This pile of cannonballs reminded Josh and me of Daleks from Doctor Who. "Exterminate!"

I thought this tree was pretty impressive.

There is a marionette museum inside! These are some of the scary ones.

Puppets from The Wizard of Oz.

Me making a little marionette man dance.

Salzburg: Hellbrunn Castle and Fountains

Prince-archbishop Sittikus had this built in 1610 for laughs. The gardens are full of fountains, some of them designed to get guests wet. I have a video of a stage filled with over 200 water-powered characters moving around that I'll try to get uploaded, as well.

The "castle" itself.

Water moves this golden crown up and down to symbolize the movement of power from the heavens to the earth.

This deer shoots water at you from its antlers and face.

Small, moving, water-powered scenes line the walkway. This one shows the devil.

This one shows a knight saving a chained lady from a dragon (receding in the back).

This grotto shows Orpheus and Eurydice (I think).

These turtles squirt water into each other's mouths.

Note the face with its tongue sticking out between the horses. The tongue goes in and out, and the eyes open and close.

The prince-archbishop sat at the head of this table. When the fountain turns on, each chair on the side sprays from the middle of the seat and from behind. The head doesn't get wet at all.

Salzburg: Mozart

Mozart spent a good part of his life in Salzburg. Unfortunately, we couldn't take photos inside his house, so we just got the signs outside.

House when he was a teenager

Salzburg: Catacombs

The catacombs are built into a rocky hill, but there are a cemetery and mausoleum outside, as well, with new burials still being made. I'm sure that costs a fortune.

Mozart's sister and Haydn's brother are buried here.

The date on the stone in the middle says 1491.

Old grave markers

Steps going up into the catacombs--very uneven and scary

Worn painting inside the catacombs

I don't know Latin, but the gist of this is that in the year 477 some stuff happened and there was a fire. I think.

Salzburg: Old Town

A lot of the sights in town are nicely situated together in Old Town.

Mozart is portrayed like a Roman god in his statue.

Translates to "Prince Leopold built me," and the larger letters form the date:  1732.

Outside the Cathedral. They were having youth fest "fest der jugend" while we were there, so we couldn't see much inside.

Part of the ceiling in the Cathedral.

A very ornate weather station.

Salzburg: Dwarf Park

Leading off of Mirabell Gardens is a little park made up of a circle of dwarf statues. They were modeled after actual people.
